Cancer Council Australia are calling for tradies to be more aware of the cancer risks on the job. On 12th October 2017, they published a fact sheet on workplace cancer. One of the main causes in Australia is exposure to silica dust.
Approximately 587,000 Australian workers were exposed to silica dust in 2011. This exposure can lead to the development of lung cancer, silicosis, kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Of these 587,000 people, they estimate that 5,758 people will likely develop lung cancer as a result of this exposure.
Terry Slevin, Chair, Occupational and Environmental Cancer Risk Committee Cancer Council Australia, said “Proper protection is a lot more than just wearing a dust mask. It includes on-site ventilation, using specialised tools with appropriate blades and dust suppression features”.
At Enviro Chasing Services, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our operators as well as other trades that may be on site at the time of cutting.
